November 17th, 2005 marks the 369th anniversary of the Low(e) Family in America.
INTRODUCTION
The United Brethren Church was established in the 1860's (though, perhaps a bit earlier) in Newburg Township in an area known as the Sunny Hill “neighborhood.” The church was established by James8 Low III and his immediate neighbors. James8 Low donated the land for the church and also for the Low(e) School across the road. Between the Low(e) School at Sunny Hill and the United Brethren Church was the Low(e) Family cemetery at Sunny Hill.
James8 Low served as a Deacon for the church until his death on September 2, 1889. It is in his personal journals that some of the earliest records of the Free Will Baptist Church appear. For a time during the Civil War years, James8' friend and brother-in-law, George W. Kenyon, kept the church records and made the notations in James8 Low’s notebooks.
Most of the Free Will Baptist Church / United Brethren Church’s records have disappeared - as have some of James8 Low’s personal journals. Those records kept in James8 Low’s journals are listed below, as are those of the larger volume of United Brethren Sunday School records which were kept beginning May 7, 1899 by James8 Low’s grand-daughters, Pearl10 Lowe, Jennie10 Smith, Daisy10 Smith, Lenna10 Lowe, Bessie10 Smith and their neighbor, William P. Landess. The United Brethren church at Sunny Hill closed in 1932 and some of its members joined the Methodist church of Pittsfield at that time. Wherever possible, I have added photos and/or genealogical info on some of the mentioned individuals. The actual text from the records ins in italics.
